BABES
on BIKES is a group of women
who enjoy bicycling and meet regularly to bike the wonderful paved trails
and quiet roads in northern Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland.
We range in age from mid-20's to mid-60's. Many of us are stay-at-home moms,
have flexible work schedules, or are retired, so we can ride during the weekdays
when the trails are less crowded. Others can ride only on weekends
and have found ride partners in the group or join us when they can take
a weekday off. Nobody has organized regular weekend group rides--yet.
Currently we lead rides every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
(except holidays).
 | Monday's Hill Ride is a
short but intense workout usually starting at 9:30 am in Arlington, VA. We have a ride leader,
but sometimes we break into groups, as some are experienced hill
climbers and others are beginners. We rotate between two routes: the
traditional route is 10 miles
and the alternate route
is 14 miles. Some of us ride the
25 mile route occasionally.
Speeds vary, but usually average 10-12 mph over the whole route.
This is an efficient workout, and a great way to start the week. |
 |
Wednesday's Trail Ride
is mostly on trails, and riders of all speeds are welcome.
Sometimes we spread out along the trail, but we always keep a buddy in
sight. Typical routes include riding to Bethesda on the Capital
Crescent Trail, riding to Vienna on the W&OD, riding to Old Town
Alexandria on the Mount Vernon Trail, and riding the loop around
Arlington. Usually 20-25 miles, approx 2 hours. |
 | Friday's Ride is a sociable but speedy 13 - 18 mph
when cruising, typically 2.5-4 hours (30-45 miles) and usually meets at 9:30 am
somewhere in Arlington, VA. The riders usually take one short break. |
We take turns leading the rides. The leader
for a ride announces the ride and the start point via e-mail.
To be on that e-mail list, please contact our Membership Babe Beth at
membership@babesonbikes.org.
Please include the following information:
1. a little about yourself
2. your biking experience
3. how you heard about us
We do not announce the ride schedule on the website; we communicate the
ride schedule ONLY via the private e-mail list.
Babes contact each other and the group
as a whole to ride other days, too, including weekends.
We also participate in large group rides such as the
Sea Gull Century and the
MS 150.
Our goals are friendship, fun, and fitness. There are no
membership fees. We are loosely organized with a
Leadership Council consisting of the Babes who perform some leadership
role. We are always delighted to welcome new
riders! Come join us! If you are interested in riding with us
or would like to find out more about the Babes on Bikes, or perhaps would
like to start a "Babes on Bikes" in your area, please
contact our Membership Babe Beth at
